What Pregnant Women Need to Know About the Swine Flu Vaccine

Swine Flu Questions AnsweredThe H1N1, or swine flu, has hit pregnant women hard in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that pregnant women have had higher rates of hospitalization then the general population, with 6 percent of the confirmed swine flu deaths in the United States being pregnant women. It's no surprise then that the CDC placed pregnant women on the priority list for receiving the swine flu vaccine.

Sarah Bell, a first-time mom-to-be from Katy, Texas, isn't sure yet if she'll get the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available. "I'm not sure yet, but I'm leaning toward getting one," she says. "The only thing that I'm hesitant about is how new it is and some of the side effects that might not be discoverable yet."

One in 12 pregnant women will not survive if the swine flu is contracted during pregnancy.

Bell's boyfriend, Jared, was recently diagnosed with the common flu, and she tends to get sick easily. "[That's a] reason to get it," says Bell. "And I'm pretty sure pregnant women were put in the top 5 priority list by the CDC for vaccinations. If I don't wind up getting the swine vaccine, I'm planning on at least getting the regular flu one."

Why the reluctance to get the swine flu vaccine?

why are we so scared of the swine flu? more than 36,000 people die each year due to the "regular" flu, and most deaths are due to pre-existing health conditons. im confused as to why the swine flu has gotten this pandemic label, after only 1000 or so deaths, and yet we dont give the common flu a pandemic label. Instead i propose that we get adjusted by a chiropractor to help boost our immune system, eat real food, drink plenty of water, and get lots of exercise. And then let the body take care of the rest, our bodies are amazing entities!!!!!!!!

I would love to see the research saying that 1 in 12 pregnant women will not survive if they get the swine flu, im betting there isnt any, especially since there has only been one study done on the side effects of the vaccine on pregnant women that only consisted of a few hundred women.

I'm not sure if I'm getting the swine flu vaccine either. How do we know it's safe? What if I don't get the flu but wind up having a reaction or something to the vaccine. It just scares me. But I will talk to my doctor about it. Thanks for the facts.
