Pregnancy After 40

Special Risks and Some Precautions to Take

Pregnancy after 40Many women today are waiting later and later to start a family. Women over 40 trying to get pregnant face medical risks with their age. Special precautions, however, can be taken to increase chances of conception and ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Getting Pregnant

It's more difficult to conceive after 40, and the miscarriage rate increases with both maternal and paternal age, says Michelle Collins, a certified nurse midwife and an assistant professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, Nashville.

It's more difficult to conceive after 40, and the miscarriage rate increases.

"My first and only child was conceived after only one month at age 39," says Sue Patton of Basking Ridge, N.J. "Now I'm 43, and I'm having problems conceiving. I've had three miscarriages in the last year, which I'm told is typical at this age."

The miscarriage rate is about 12 percent in women less than 20 years old, and increases to 26 percent in women older than 40, who are at "an advanced maternal age," Collins says. "For women over 35, there is a higher incidence of chromosomal abnormalities; the body's ability to recognize these in an embryo results in the higher miscarriage rate."

I am 43 and 14 weeks pregnant. My doctors have all told me that I am healthier and in better shape than most of the 20-somethings they see. My blood works is normal and my blood pressure couldn't be better. I celebrate any woman who has the courage to have a child, no matter what her age. 40 is the new 20, after all.

I felt that this article was NOT balanced in the least. Some women did not, (or still can not,) find a loving partner in time to conceive

I had my son at 40 and am just pregnant with my 2nd at 42. I wish I was younger but it's not the case. Articles like this turn woman our age off of having children when we are just as capable as a 30 year old.

I always wanted to have children but did not find the right man and marry him until I was 39. Our 1st son was born when I was 40, our second was born when I was 41. Needless to say, both are active, happy, healthy kids. We are trying for baby #3 (our last). It has been more difficult to conceive, but there are a number of options to get pregnant for those having difficulty. The risks of pregnancy may be slightly greater at our age, but the odds for a healthy baby are still in our favor. With any pregnancy, whether you are an older or younger woman, having a healthy lifestyle & receiving good pre-natal care is key

I HAVE NEVER HAD THE URGE TO HAVE CHILDREN BUT NOW I FIND MYSELF WITH A MAN WHO WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A CHILD. I AM 41 & HE IS 49. I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT RISKS THERE ARE FOR A FIRST PREGNACY THIS LATE IN LIFE. I AGREE W/ THE OTEHR COMMENT THAT THIS ARTICLE SUCKS.
