Many parents today are choosing their baby's name in a most modern way – with a baby name consultant. Albion Mulcock of Salt Lake City, Utah, was a newly expecting father of a second son when he hired Jennifer Moss, a baby name consultant based in Los Angeles. Mulcock and his wife, Julie, wanted a strong male name to carry on seven generations of family in the United States from England. His first son's name, Albion Sidney, was nearly automatically a given name, based on the family tradition of sons being named after their fathers and grandfathers.

The Mulcocks used the name suggestion service, listing names they like, family names and names they definitely wanted to exclude, says Moss, author of The One-In-A-Million Baby Name Book (Perigee Press, 2008). "We use that information to research possible name choices. We then provide a list of 12 names and a full-color name certificate as a keepsake."

Mulcock enjoyed the fact that Moss considers how the baby's first name sounds with the family's last name and even the mother's maiden name. The name they decided upon: Finley. "It's a strong name, and people will remember him," Mulcock says. "A name is so important. It's good to have some help with this. Jennifer is a golden light for our family."

Hiring a baby name consultant is a trend that's been boosted by the Internet and celebrities. The Internet gives parents access to many more opinions as well as expert advice, Moss says.

The influence of celebrity baby naming and celebrity pregnancies are getting parents to think about their own baby's name more, Moss says. This summer, the names Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt picked for their newborn twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, made headlines across the country.
