You may be traveling with your infant during the summer months, going for drives to view the fall leaves or getting out to enjoy the moderate spring weather at local parks. But no matter the season, unlike life before baby, there are several things to consider when packing a
bag before any outing or day trip.
Here are some tips from the experts on the essentials to pack in the diaper bag in case of emergency and tried-and-true tactics from experienced moms.
Pack your diaper bag so you're ready for everything and anything. |

Sandra Gordon, mom of two and author of Consumer Reports Best Baby Products (Consumer Reports Books, 2007), says that a deal breaker on some diaper bags is the outside bottle pocket. "It can be too small for some types of bottles, so you'll want to check that out when you're diaper bag shopping by bringing along the bottle you plan to use," she says.
As for feeding time, Gordon suggests packing bottles of formula or breast milk
in freezer/fridge packs to prevent spoilage. Or, if you're using a powdered formula,
be sure to carry bottled water to mix it with. It's also not a bad idea to carry
an extra clean and empty bottle in case you are somewhere that doesn't allow for
washing bottles. For nursing moms, be sure to pack a snack for yourself, as nursing
requires you to consume an extra 500 calories a day, and a shawl or small blanket
with a safety pin to attach to your shirt in case you're out somewhere and need
to nurse discreetly.
