A Man's Touch in the Baby Nursery

Designing the Baby Nursery with the Dad-to-be

A Man's Touch-Designing the Nursery with the Dad-to-beDesigning a nursery for your baby is one of the joys of pregnancy. Choosing colors, furniture and themes are pure fun for the mom-to-be. But the best part of all is when the dad-to-be gets in on the excitement, too.

Mary Castillo from Newport Beach, Calif., remembers how it felt to have her husband be an integral part of her delight. "As soon as we knew we were having a boy, my husband immediately went online to look at nursery themes," Castillo says. "He became an expert and while I worked at home, I'd get messages from him to look at this one or that one. His choices ranged from the silly (neon monkeys) to the sweet (Dream Teddy) and I felt so lucky for my baby that he would come into a world with a daddy who loved him so much."

Daddy Help
Judith Wilson, the owner and principal designer of the Judith Wilson Design Group, Inc. in Studio City, Calif., loves to design nurseries – especially when the dad is involved in the process. She says that because more and more husbands are involved with the care of children today, it only follows they would be more involved with designing a nursery.

Having the home ready can greatly reduce the stress a mom may feel when the birth day is approaching.

"With more women working than ever, some husbands are the main caregivers and are truly 'Mr. Mom,'" Wilson says. "So it's important that both parents can feel comfortable taking care of Baby, when the other has to run to an important meeting. There's nothing worse than having a husband feel like he has 12 thumbs and is afraid to pick up Baby. The nursery decisions can be fun for both husband and wife as a team. After all, raising Baby is a team effort for the next 18 years."

Wilson believes another reason it is important for the future dad to be involved in designing a nursery is because the room needs to work for him as well as for Mom. "Men think differently than women, so with that said, we need to ask husband some questions," she says. "One question might be, if it's your turn to get up in the middle of the night to change Baby, then settle him/her down to go back to sleep, what's going to help you with that A Man's Touch-Designing the Nursery with the Dad-to-betask? For some men that may be a large enough rocker for him to sit in, or having the trash bucket next to the changing table."
