My husband and I live up on a mountain near Skyline Drive in Virginia. We live in a cabin built by my husband, and when he's not helping people in town with projects ("If he can build a cabin, why not help with such and such project?" they say.), we clear a little bit of land, study or make the house ready for our second baby due in January.
Now, in my first pregnancy, I never took to weeping fits, but this time apparently it's different. We have a bathhouse that we built this summer for family to have bathing privacy when they visit. But it hasn't been painted yet. So we planned to take last Monday off to paint.
Monday morning came around and it was raining. Not just any rain, but a veritable deluge. Not only that, but the homemade soup I had made using dry beans (my first effort) was days from being ready, and "I followed the directions, I promise." Oh, and I had planned to go to the county clerks office that day to check the deed on some property we planned to purchase.
But I couldn't face the chance that I would break down in front of strangers. After all, I had totally loused up my life. I was a total failure. A horrible wife. A horrible cook. A horrible planner of family events. It rained, and I didn't read the directions. So in response I lost it. The whole day was gone as far as I was concerned. I couldn't see this as permission to play with my husband and son; our painting plans, and my chance to show my culinary expertise, were ruined.
So after a half hour or so of crying, I took another nap. I woke up several hours later, and my husband took us to the mall, where we bought soft pretzels and a Thomas the Tank Engine book for my son. Oh, yes, and a new maternity turtleneck for me.
I may be nuts, but my husband knows it's only temporary insanity.
