While pregnancy doesn't affect the man as profoundly as the woman,that doesn't mean that a dad-to-be isn't full of questions.

According to Shirley Moore, a certified nurse-midwife in Chicago, Ill., if your wife is having a normal, healthy pregnancy, it is OK to continue to have intercourse until her bag of waters breaks or until she starts to have labor contractions.

"Some believe that certain aspects of sexual relations can actually help to ripen or prepare the cervix for labor by contributing to increased production of prostaglandins," says Moore. But Moore reminds dads-to-be that if at any time intercourse is not comfortable, becomes unpleasant, causes pain or bleeding, you should stop and notify a health care provider.

"First of all, many men who will eventually be enthusiastic about a pregnancy/new baby often get very scared initially," says Paul Coleman, a psychologist, family therapist and author of How to Say It for Couples: Communicating With Tenderness, Openness and Honesty. "Reasons for that vary but most men get concerned about finances. Can they afford the baby? How will it affect their lifestyle? Many men also secretly worry that their wives will have less time for them – which tends to be true – but it isn't fatal. Couples can become even closer after a baby arrives despite the fact that couple-time is compromised.
