Questions from Dads-to-be

Answers to Expectant Dads' Top Questions

While pregnancy doesn't affect the man as profoundly as the woman, that doesn't mean that a dad-to-be isn't full of questions.

How long is it OK to have sex with my wife while she's pregnant? Is there a time we need to stop until the baby is born

Many men who will eventually be enthusiastic about a pregnancy/new baby often get very scared initially.

According to Shirley Moore, a certified nurse-midwife in Chicago, Ill., if your wife is having a normal, healthy pregnancy, it is OK to continue to have intercourse until her bag of waters breaks or until she starts to have labor contractions.

"Some believe that certain aspects of sexual relations can actually help to ripen or prepare the cervix for labor by contributing to increased production of prostaglandins," says Moore. But Moore reminds dads-to-be that if at any time intercourse is not comfortable, becomes unpleasant, causes pain or bleeding, you should stop and notify a health care provider.
