Saving Money on Maternity Clothes

Be Frugal and Fashionable During Pregnancy

Even though she is grateful for the secondhand clothes, Winograd, a money savvy stay-at-home mom, wanted to feel special during her second pregnancy. "I enjoy buying new clothes," she says. "I did not want to go nine months with just hand-me-downs and clothes I'd worn before. Also, I had a couple of special occasions I was going to, like a wedding where I had to wear something nicer. I went to the maternity stores in the mall and found things on sale that were not too expensive."

Online Bargains
Winograd also saved money by searching online for sales on maternity clothes. "I would just wait until something was on sale and buy things online," Winograd says. "I had to return a few things, but it's easier. It's not as much a hassle as it used to be to return things you bought online."

Sherri Spaw, the owner of Her Special Time Maternity in Wesley Chapel, Fla., says it's easy to find bargains online. "Depending where you live you can find some good bargains at the end of the season," Spaw says. "If you are shopping online, it may be 30 degrees where you live but here in Florida it's 80 degrees."

Spaw says women don't need to spend a fortune on new maternity clothes to look fashionable. She suggests investing in quality maternity jeans and slacks to last the entire pregnancy. Then, mix and match by bringing in less expensive T-shirts or maternity tops.

"I have people who are on their second or third babies and they don't want to be frumpy this time," Spaw says. "They want to wear more fashionable pieces. For a mom-to-be, fashion does not mean they have to spend $200 on a pair of jeans. I ask moms when they come in if they work or stay at home. If they work, we help them tailor their wardrobes by taking a simple white blouse and pair of nice maternity slacks, and adding accessories they already own."

I was given a lot of maternity clothes from friends and family. I found this the best way to save money. I did buy myself a nice pair of jeans and a couple nicer shirts for special occasions.
