Spotting During Pregnancy

Should Moms-to-be Worry If They're Spotting?

Spotting during pregnancy - should you worry about spotting? When Cynthia Corona from San Jose, Calif., contacted a Pregnancy Today site expert about her light spotting, she was, as she says, "freaking out." Her spotting had been intermittent, just some pink and brown on the toilet tissue, but she was terrified of losing the pregnancy. An ultrasound a few weeks later calmed her fears. Not only was she still pregnant, but she was expecting twins. The spotting turned out to be just her body's way of adjusting to a twin pregnancy.

Although very scary, especially for a first-time mother-to-be, spotting is fairly common in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. What can ease a woman's fears is understanding the reasons for spotting and knowing what action she should take.

Signs and Symptoms

Any bleeding during the second and third trimesters should be immediately reported to your doctor.

When a woman finds anything that even remotely resembles blood when she's pregnant, her first thought is usually of miscarriage. But according to Dr. Aneema Van Groenou, a staff physician at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward, Calif., and the author of The Active Woman's Guide to Pregnancy: Practical Advice for Getting Outdoors When Expecting (Ten Speed Press, 2004), a miscarriage generally has some pretty specific symptoms associated with it aside from just spotting.

"Some people do spot during a typical pregnancy, especially in the first three months as your body adjusts to the hormone levels," says Dr. Van Groenou. "It commonly happens around the time your period would be due. Sometimes people don't even realize they're pregnant because they bleed right on schedule."

I had some spotting with my twin pregnancy at 8 weeks that lasted 5-7 days and every day was a struggle to stay positive and not freak out. I have had 3 ultrasounds since and the babies are doing fantastic and both have strong heart beats. I had sex last night and had a little bit of a pinkish discharge that freaked me out again and I'm having some very light spotting today. We were very careful and I just had my last ultrasound 2 days ago and all was well. I'm trying to stay positive and remember that this happens and as long as there is no cramping or pain and it is light, it is okay. I hope other mothers read this and it helps calm your nerves. Also, the first ultrasound I had at 8 weeks my babies had low heart rates and I had spotting and we've made it well past that scary time. Keep your head up and know that spotting just happens.

I has a big scare yesterday when I went to the bathroom and saw some pink on the tissue. I paniced!! After talking with my physician, he told me that it was normal in the first trimester and just to relax. I have another sonogram scheduled this friday to make sure everything is still okay. The spotting is also around the time my usual period would be. In general....I feel great and can't wait for my new bundle of joy to arrive. I feel that the key to this is not stressing, staying positive, and definitely not panicing.

Yip its a scary thing the old spotting!! Just going through it now, had a big cry yesterday but feeling a bit more level today.
Its funny how quickly you can become attached to a bunch of cells growing in your uterus.
I am 6 weeks & trying to remain positive, i still feel pregnant, so finger crossed i still am.

I am 10 1/2 weeks pregnant with my first...the doctor told me I had a friable or very irritable cervix. Meaning that with internal examinations or intercourse it may lead to a small bleed afterward but should be monitored carefully. Unless I am examined I have had no spotting or bleeding at all and the baby has been healthy. Hope this helps.
