Young, Pregnant and Entering Single Motherhood-Two Women's Stories

For some women, finding out they are pregnant is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Many moms struggle to get pregnant, and when they succeed, they couldn't be happier. Then there are those women who become pregnant by accident, only to find a lack of support from the baby's father and other people in their lives. Matters become even more complicated if the moms-to-be are young and still dependent on parents or others.

How women choose to deal with this situation is entirely individual. While some are terrified and remain dependent, others use the baby as a wake-up call and create an independent life for the soon-to-be family of two. We found two young, single mothers who handled their unexpected pregnancies in different ways.

How women choose to deal with this situation is entirely individual.

Here is Melanie's story, in her own words:

"After conversing with my friend about how I had eaten like a sow that day and had been doing so quite a bit recently, it was suggested, jokingly, that I might be pregnant. Being on the pill and being very faithful to it, I shrugged off his comment at first. Then I seriously began to think about it. It sure would explain some of the things that had been happening: unexplained weight gain, moodiness and the recent inability to go 20 minutes without needing to use the restroom.

I can relate very much to these stories at this moment. Im 21 and actually starting school nxt month and just found out 3 wks ago that im pregnant. At first my bf was very supportive and sweet but after telling me he wanted to abort and I told him I didn't want to, he decided he didn't wanna be wit me in this situation just because he's not ready yet. Im pretty scared but know I have to stay strong, right now I have nothing, im very much dependent on my mom who is also a single mother. I still want to go to school, it's actually just a 5 month program and it's in a different state and town where I know no one but I feel it's something I have to go through with and keep my head up for.

You should wate tell you are out of school and try some college. I am a mother of two and I had my first at 20 yrs. I am 30 now and just starteing college now. I have work too many dead end jobs and long with my husbean to just make money to pay the bills. We live pay chack to pay check and it is very hard to try to make it in this world right now. Just think about what I have said. You need to fine who you are before you are some ones mom.

No matter what, you'll make it. But I would highly suggest waiting until after you graduate high school. You might not think anything bad will happen but none of us can see the future. It's better to have your high school diploma in your hands before you take the leap into parenthood.

Best wishes. Don't forget what I said.

im a young teen and want a child because i think it is an amazing thing to do and it will be something that nobody can take away from us! But im scared that it will either break us or the child will, in some way, be taken away from us. (ie. Abortion, parents, social workers etc). I am 14 and, like many people my age, have a good background, education and am doing well at school. Would a child bring me down in any way of education or respect from people?? help me please xx
