When I first found out that I was pregnant, I was 19 years of age. My mom knew right off of the bat that I was pregnant, but I didn't believe her. I took a test and it was apparent that I was going to have a baby. I was very scared, being a child myself, but I sucked it up and realized that I was going to have the biggest responsibility ever.
As the months went on I was getting so anxious to hold my child in my arms. On August 6, 2001, at 3:20 a.m., my water broke. This is when the realness just sunk in. I was going to be a mother and in just a few hours.
I arrived at the hospital at 4:20 in the morning. They took me to my birthing suite and checked me out to make sure that my water did indeed break and it was time. I was only 1 centimeter dilated when they checked me out the first time. And guess what? I had no contractions and was only 1 centimeter again at 7 a.m. I thought that it was going to take all day long.
So at 7:40 a.m. they gave me Pitocin to help my labor along. At this point I was just getting mad because nothing was happening. Then that is when it started, at about 8:20 a.m. All of the contractions just came all at once.
At about 10:30 a.m. the nurse offered me some Stadol (which you are allowed four little bottles of and in each bottle there is four doses). I ended up taking two doses of one bottle. I sat up rocking back and forth the whole time I was in labor.
It was about 11:30 a.m. and the baby was ready to come out; the only thing was they had to hold the baby inside of me because they thought that it was going to take a long time for me to deliver my baby, so the doctor hadn't even arrived yet!
The doctor finally ran in the door at 11:50 a.m. and I was able to start pushing. I only had to push about three or four times and I gave birth to my son at 11:59 a.m. He weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 19 inches long. Oh yeah, and not to mention he had the worst cone-head you have ever seen. All I could say was, "Oh my God, he has a conehead!"
I am 23 years old and my son will be 4 this August, and he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. And I have done it all on my own. I am now expecting my second child, and yes, after all that I am so nervous this go around too.
From a mother just like you,
Jennifer
