December 12, 2000

21 weeks, 4 days

We are having a girl! We had our ultrasound last Wednesday and it was wonderful. I really thought this little one was going to be a boy, but the technician said that he is 95 percent sure our baby is a girl. Of course he said that he doesn't give guarantees. He checked twice during the ultrasound and both times he was able to point out the "girl parts" and pointed out where the scrotum would be if it was a boy. Nothing there! We were able to see her little feet and toes, her fingers, and her beating heart. I haven't heard if everything was OK since the technician isn't able to reveal anything. I did see the midwife on Friday, but they didn't have the report back from radiology yet. She asked for it to be faxed over, but it didn't arrive before the end of my appointment. Everything looked OK to my untrained eyes so I'm not worried.

Speaking of the midwife, I was thrilled with her. I saw her for my prenatal appointment because my doctor is on paternity leave for a few weeks. Those prenatal appointments are usually so short, but she talked to me for an hour. I am still trying to decide if I want another C-section or if I should try a VBAC so I had lots of questions. She went through my entire op report from my first C-section and she said that I am a perfect candidate for a VBAC. She also told me that if I start to labor and then decide I want a C-section that the hospital has to abide by my wishes. She wasn't pushy about doing the VBAC, just very informative. She even went to find some literature for me. I have also been having a lot of pelvic pressure and I was concerned about it. She checked to see if I was dilated at all, and I'm not, but she really took my concerns seriously. She asked when I had first felt the baby move and when I told her, she wrote it in my chart. My regular doctor laughed at me when I told him that I felt some movement around the 15-16th week. He didn't bother to write it in my chart, even though there is a spot for it. The midwife said that I had been pregnant before and that I knew the difference between fetal movement and gas. I really want to switch from my doctor to the midwife, but I feel bad. I know that it's my body and that I shouldn't worry about it, but my doctor is very nice. I don't want him to feel bad. Of course he probably has so many patients that he really wouldn't care. Greg says that having a midwife makes him nervous, based on my history. I reassured him that I would still be having the baby at the hospital and that if anything went wrong that there will be a doctor available. We'll see.

That's it for this week. I did go a little wild and buy a lot of girl clothes after we got the news. When we told Brendan that he's going to have a sister he wasn't thrilled. He will only say that she's not a girl, she's a yo-yo.
