Becky's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 27, 2004

About my picture... they seem to have cropped it wrong, and blown it up so I look like a pixelhead. To see what I really look like, check out one of my posts on my TTM board.

Well, it could be any day now. I’ve had lots to write about but little energy or time to write. But the house is finally clean, and everything is ready for the baby. I spent most of January at 2 centimeters dilated, with effacement going up a little each week. Today I had another checkup and I’m 3 centimeters dilated, and 75% effaced! Both my doctor and my doula think this is a good sign that I’ll have a good labor and that the baby should come fairly soon. My ultrasound due date is this Friday. I am ready any time. I am getting so tired, and it’s getting harder to go to work every day. But since I am limited (by finances) to 8 weeks off, I want to save as much of that time for with the baby as I can; I don’t want to waste it sitting at home waiting. No contractions yet, not even Braxton Hicks. I think the baby will be born sometime between tomorrow (Wednesday) and Sunday (Super Bowl day). If not, I have another OB appt. on Monday, and he’ll probably want to induce me sometime next week. I think if I really wanted to, he would induce me this week. But I’d like to go into labor naturally if possible.

Jason is getting impatient too. He is pretty nervous, but also really wants to meet the baby and hold it, since he hasn’t had a physical connection to the baby. He has always thought it would be a girl, but a coworker of his recently found out at her second ultrasound that she was having a boy, even though they’d told her it was a girl 3 months ago. That also happened to a friend of mine. So we’re both going to be surprised.

So now I’m just waiting. Trying to rest and relax, but keep busy so I don’t get bored. I’m going to make all my birth announcements, so I started designing those last night. Rubber stamping is one of my hobbies, and I’m making really nice ones to make up for not having sent out Christmas cards this year.

Previous thoughts, written after we pre-registered at the hospital.

I will have to write shorter diary entries or I will never get any sleep. So this is only part of last week, but I’ll catch up eventually. With only about 2 1/2 weeks to go, my energy is waning.

Last Tuesday we toured the hospital delivery floor, which was really fun. Our hospital has very homey rooms, where you labor, deliver, and recover in the same room, unless they are really, really full and they need a delivery bed. All their rooms are private; nothing like the ones you see on TV sitcoms where there’s two or three moms in one room. The nurse who took us around was really great at explaining what happens, and what all the equipment is for so we wouldn’t freak out if we saw them take out some piece of equipment. There is room for the baby to stay in the same room with the whole time, but if you’re tired the nurses will take the baby to the nursery for you.

They have pretty high security—the wristbands will set off alarms if anyone takes your baby close to the elevators. And no one can take the baby from the nursery if they don’t have a matching wristband. I had never really worried about security before, but it was comforting to know.
