Becky's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

July 31, 2003

I’m trying to catch up on a few entries since I didn’t start my diary until now. So there will be a couple entries summarizing the first trimester.

As I said in my intro, I was fairly certain I was pregnant about 10 dpo. I didn’t get any HPTs because I had to pay for the blood test anyway, and they scheduled the blood test for 14 dpo, which is about as early as you can test if you have long cycles like I do. At my clinic you have to call them two hours later to get the results. I called from my cell phone in the car so I wouldn’t alert anyone at work. The nurse told me Congratulations—it was positive! Even though I had suspected, I was still in shock. I called my husband at work right away because I couldn’t wait to tell him. He was as shocked as I was. The nurse said that I should come in for an ultrasound in 3 weeks to make sure everything is okay; that is their standard procedure for people on Clomid. So we decided to wait to tell everyone until then.

We did give in and tell my sister and Jason’s brother, who were sworn to secrecy for a few weeks. (They both knew we were ttc.) The only other person who knew was my dentist, since I had an appt. the next week.

I went by myself to the ultrasound, because we didn’t want to arouse suspicion at work if we both went to the doctor at the same time. (We both work at the same company, but in different departments.) Also, I thought there would just be a little round blob and we wouldn't be able to see much.

I was so surprised at how much you could see at 7 weeks (past LMP). You could kind of make out a head, body, and tail, and you could watch the heartbeat and hear the heartbeat if they turned on the sound. They also gave me some pictures to take home. The ultrasound made it seem more real. They also dated the baby at 7 weeks old and estimated a due date of Jan. 30.

I called my mom right after the ultrasound to tell her the news because I wasn’t sure when I’d see her in person next. She was of course overjoyed. Our baby will be the first grandkid on both sides of the family; we’re the only ones of all our siblings who are married.

We each went our separate ways Father’s Day weekend—Jason to visit his dad and me to visit my dad, so we could share the news in person at the same time. I gave my dad a homemade card that said “A promotion to grandfather is coming in 2004” and he was very excited. It’s funny how even early in pregnancy, people who find out will suddenly do everything for you. I had brought the dogs with to my dad’s, and when they needed to go outside after I shared the news he offered to take them right away.

At seven weeks I was feeling slightly nauseous but eating smaller meals helped. I’ve had evening sickness—I feel great in the mornings after getting a good night’s sleep, but feel yucky after working all day, so I usually take a nap after work.
