Knowing exactly what you want when you go shopping is the best way to make sure you won’t find it. This has happened to me many times, most recently last night with a safety bath duck. I wanted to get one for my friend’s baby shower (which was today at noon.) I had already gotten a cute outfit, but thought adding a $2 safety duck would be fine. Plus, I knew they wanted one because they had mentioned it a baby shower for another coworker of ours. Target was sold out. They didn’t have any more in the back room. Walmart was sold out. They didn’t have any more either. So I gave up because it was really late, and just gave my friend the outfit.
I did get to hold the baby the whole time they opened presents—people were glad to let me since I was the only pregnant one at the shower. He was so good, just slept and wiggled and didn’t fuss at all. But he is only about 3 weeks old.
Remember my last entry about stocking first aid kits? Well, I really should take my own advice! Except, I hadn’t considered a first aid kid for dogs. Cricket (our big mutt) had torn a nail because she was too close to my husband’s video rocker and got crushed. (Does she ever learn? No, she just wants to be close to us.) I didn’t know this, but noticed she’d been licking her paw all day, so I checked it out and decided to cut her nail so it was smooth. I cut the quick, which is not a huge deal, but if you’ve ever done that, you know it’s basically like cutting a vein. The blood just keeps gushing, and gushing, and gushing and gushing. And we had no stiptik (which can stop the bleeding) in the house. I did go to Target later after her bleeding stopped and stock up on bandages (one of which Cricket tore off as soon as we left her alone for 2 minutes) but the pet store was closed. I tried the bandage because the wound actually reopened when we got back from the store. At least the human first aid stuff is stocked now.
On Tuesday, I felt the baby move for the first time! At least, the first time that I recognized what it was. I think I’ve felt small movements before but thought it was just gas, or my organs shifting, or something else. But Tuesday I went to bed and lay on my back and rubbed my belly. Then when I stopped rubbing my belly, I felt the baby move! The next morning it kicked (or punched, who knows) a whole bunch and last night too. I usually feel it move when I’m still, but every once in awhile during the day I feel it too. Like today in the middle of a team meeting that I was leading. (Luckily I refrained from interrupting everyone with “I just felt the baby move” like I do with my husband.)
I’m down to one pair of dress pants and one pair of sweat pants that fit comfortably, and it’s getting too cool to wear summer dresses. But I still can’t fit into maternity clothes because my belly isn’t very big yet. I may have to go shopping again this weekend.
Next Tuesday is the ultrasound, and hopefully we won’t have to call the baby “it” any more!
