Becky's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

November 12, 2003

No, we didn’t finally get a DVD player, or a cell phone, we’ve had those for awhile. We got a dishwasher! This may seem mundane to some people, but to me and my husband, who have been married for 6 years, never had one, and both really hate washing dishes, it’s a really exciting thing. I would rather do just about anything than wash dishes, including cleaning up dog poop from the yard. My mother-in-law doesn’t mind dishes at all, and does them every day after supper, no matter what. We, on the other hand, let them stack up until we don’t have any clean spoons or forks left to eat with, or are out of pots and pans to cook something.

The dishwasher is portable, since we have old cupboards and didn’t want to re-do them at this point We do have the space for a built-in, but would have to tear apart and rebuild the cupboards to do it. A portable dishwasher was much cheaper, and it can be converted later if we decide to invest in the kitchen.

I got it up and running tonight (and we even had 3 days worth of dishes to fill it up with!), and I realized how comforting the sound of a dishwasher was. My parents had one while I was growing up, and my mom would usually run the dishwasher at night after we went to bed. My bedroom was on the same floor, but a few doors down from the kitchen, so I could always hear it in the distance. If you sit in our living room, our dishwasher sounds exactly the same as the one at my mom’s house.

Our dog Cricket is scared of it—my husband said when it was first delivered, she growled at it for awhile. For one thing, it’s in the spot where her kennel used to be. So there’s this big, strange box that can be wheeled around and makes a lot of loud noises when it’s turned on in her former spot. I’m sure she’ll get used to it in a couple weeks. It does make me glad we’re introducing all these house changes for the baby in stages before the baby is actually here, so once the baby comes she only has to get used to the baby instead of the whole house being changed around.

29 week appt.

I think I’m at 29 weeks, but I’ve lost track recently. I had my doctor’s appt. today and I have gained 10 pounds since the last appt. That puts me at only X plus 12 for weight gain, so I’m doing pretty good. Several people in my husband’s dept., who know me but don’t see me often, are still joking that they don’t think I’m pregnant because I’m not showing enough. But my belly is quite tall, growing up first instead of out. The doctor said my belly measured perfect, so I’m not worried. The baby’s heartbeat was 140.

I am now hungry all the time. Eating a bowl of cereal with a glass of orange juice for breakfast only gives me enough energy to get to work. Once I sit down at my desk, I feel terrible until I start snacking, and I pretty much snack constantly until 10 or 10:30, and sometimes even up until lunch.

The baby’s kicks and movements are big enough to see now. Sometimes when I’m sitting at my desk I look down and my shirt pops up, or the baby moves and my belly actually changes shape. It’s kind of weird. The baby moves quite often, especially if I miss my snacks.

I need to get way more sleep but I’m so busy. I’m behind at work and should be putting in some extra hours, but I’m not, because I have so much to do at home. We had to put up some plastic on the outside of our drafty windows over the lunch hour Monday and Tuesday, because those were the only days warm enough for it. We appreciated it today when it snowed though. We had to put it on the outside, because every time we try the shrink plastic inside, the dogs jump up and tear big holes in it. Speaking of which, I also had to replace the curtains in the living room because Cricket (our BIG dog) tore holes in the old lace ones, plus pulling down the curtain rod and bending it 2 or 3 times. The new curtains have stronger rods and tiebacks so I can open the curtains for her during the day. I’ve given up on keeping her off the couch, and just made it so she can look out without destroying things. The things we do for our pets. And I have to get the house cleaned for a bunch of guests on Sunday. My husband is performing in a musical and his family and some of our friends are coming, so I’m having them all for lunch before the matinee showing.

Well, once again I’m up way too late. But the dishwasher was too exciting not to record. It will mean more time for spending with each other, the dogs, and the baby when he/she gets here. And less stress for us, and I won't have to look at piles of dirty dishes. Totally worth the money.
