Cara's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

February 4, 2004

6 days old

I am on page 2 of who knows how many of Jay's birth story, but wanted to write a really quick update. I have been incredibly busy with a house that is not yet completely unpacked and all three of the kids.

Jay and I are both doing well. He began looking jaundiced the day after we came home from the hospital (Saturday). By Monday morning he was quite yellow and we made a trip to the pediatrician who found his bilirubin level to be 22 (quite high for a 4 day old). At a level of 15, the dr. can determine whether to do phototherapy, and at 20, it is pretty much required. So he started on a bili blanket that day. We went back to the dr. this morning, and his bili level is now 20, which is not coming down as quickly as would be preferred, so he has graduated to a bili bed now. I am so down because he is to be on this bed with the phototherapy lights at all times except for when he is eating. It has a little thing that to me looks like a straightjacket that wraps him up on the bed so that he stays warm. I hate not being able to hold and cuddle him all I want. And Tommy has taken this week plus a couple of days off work to be with us and hardly gets any snuggle time with him at all. It makes me sad.

We go back Friday morning to have his levels checked once again. Please wish us luck that he will be released from captivity and allowed to join our family in snuggling and group hugs and warm fuzzies : )
