Introduction

New Year’s Eve - 3:30 a.m.

27 Weeks

Hello Everyone,

I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday and were able to spend time with friends and family.

Christmas Day

Our Christmas was really great, I couldn’t have hoped for a better one. On Christmas Day, Charles and I opened our gifts to one another. We got each other some really nice things but the best gifts of all were gifts we had gotten for the baby. We had previously agreed that we would each get 5 gifts for the baby and that we would each open the other’s gifts on Christmas morning. I tell you, I had a hard time coming up with anything that was original or cute enough for a Christmas present. Clothes were hard because everything that was out was for winter and clearly when the baby is born, we won’t need anything for colder weather. I ended up getting a couple of cute little shits and onesies (totally unoriginal), one outfit, a cute pair of red mittens attached by one string (which now that I think about it is probably a major choking hazard), 2 hand-knitted summer hats, a rattle set, magnetic letters and a clock that teaches you how to tell time.

Charles definitely bought better gifts than I did. He got a book about this cute little elephant called Humphrey, which I had never heard of but was extremely pretty. He also bought a beautiful jumper for when the baby is older, an electronic Baby Mozart toy (plays Mozart but in a more “babified manner”). He also got a bunch of other little adorable baby items and it was so great just opening all this stuff and realizing that next Christmas most of it will actually be in use.

The day after Christmas we went to my parents’ with my sister and her husband. We had sort of a second Christmas that day and again, we opened a lot of stuff for the baby. My sister got me the Baby Bjorn carrier which I love already. In the box for the carrier was a brochure for other BB products, one of which was a diaper bag that looked incredible. Has anyone had any experience with it? Jenn. B. got the same diaper bag for Christmas and said it’s great and she was even nice enough to offer to buy it for me in Canada because it would be so much cheaper for me that way. I was actually surprised that I haven’t been able to find one in the stores here and just to be sure, would like to see one in person before I commit to buying it. I wonder how much they are in the States anyway?

As I was saying, my mom spoiled us with baby stuff and it really was a great Christmas spent with family. For dinner, my mom made a great meat fondue complete with an array homemade mayonnaise dipping sauces, none of which I could eat since they were made with a raw egg base. I also was forbidden from drinking egg nog (which I love), due to the raw egg issue. Amazing how much stuff you are not allowed to eat when you are pg.

OB Appointment

In my last entry, I failed to report on my most recent OB appointment on December 21. At that appointment (my 25th week), I amazingly gained NOT ONE POUND. How I managed that, I have no idea but everyone was beyond shocked to say the least. I even managed to lose a 1/4 lb - not much, but hey, I’ll take it. When my OB asked me what I did differently, I seriously couldn’t come up with a thing, I have not changed my diet at all. Just one of those things, I guess. Let’s hope it continues like this for the next three months.

Also at this same appointment, my OB informed me that I will be taking my GTT at my next appointment on January 9, along with my Rhogam shot. We discussed with her the benefits of cord blood registry and have decided to do it since it is such a small price to pay for your child’s health. Let’s see, what else...the nurse listened to the baby again with the Doppler and the minute she put the wand on my stomach, the baby kicked so hard s/he shook the nurse’s hand away, it was really cute. The nurse informed us that is must be a boy because only boys kick that hard when disturbed. We shall see.

Horrible Cold

If you will look at the top of this entry, you will notice the time. The reason I am up this early (or this late depending on how you look at it), is that I cannot sleep at all. I currently have one of the worst colds ever but the weirdest thing about it is that it only bothers me at night. During the day, the cold is nowhere to be seen, but at night - watch out - pure misery. Because I am always so congested, I now sleep with my mouth open. I am sure this is not a pretty sight for Charles but unfortunately I have no control over it. When I wake, my mouth feels like sandpaper and my throat feels like I just had my tonsils out. To combat this, I keep water by my bed which I sip every time I get up to pee, which of course is often due to the constant sipping of water. Talk about a truly VICIOUS cycle. Again, what is so weird about all of it is that the cold is completely gone during daylight hours. I wonder why that is? Is it really even a cold I have or just some weird pg symptom?

Belly and Bladder

One of the most recent developments with this baby is that for some reason, it likes to pinpoint the exact location of my bladder and kick it until I am forced to run screaming to the bathroom. It is not just a simple kick either, the whole episode is a progression of separate events. What happens is, (and this is usually right after I have already gone to the bathroom), I will feel the baby move around in my stomach. S/he will roll and turn in a completely different direction than before and I will suddenly get the sensation of some baby body part (I’m guessing a foot) really low in my abdomen, down near my bladder. A distinct pressure will be applied to my bladder immediately causing me to have to pee again and then, the next phase starts - severe kicking. It’s sort of like the baby is thinking, “I’m not just content to lie here and put pressure on this bladder, let me also kick the --- out of it too.” This newest little development has been going on for 2 days now. When I go to the OB next week I will ask her if it is normal for the baby to be (what seems to me) so low in my stomach. I would have thought that the baby would be higher up in my belly by now.

Speaking of which, there are days now when the baby is distinctly squished all into one side of my stomach. If I stand in front of the mirror with no shirt on, I can plainly see that one side of my belly is sticking out further than the other, giving it a very lopsided appearance. I still have a belly button though the hole is far from being the slit it once used to be. The hole is now so big, you could probably stick a cork in it. Let’s hope that goes back to normal because if not, it won’t be pretty.

Infant CPR and Prenatal Swimming

This past week I signed Charles and I up for an infant CPR course at the hospital. Both of us know regular CPR but we really want to be sure that we know what we are doing when it comes to an infant. Hopefully, we will never have to use it. I am also supposed to start my prenatal swimming class at the Y this week, that is, if I ever find a bathing suit. Yesterday Charles and I went to two different malls looking for a bathing suit and came up with nothing. In Motherhood, I tried on one of those horrid one pieces with the skirt, you know the kind? I thought maybe it wouldn’t look so bad. When I called Charles in to get his opinion he just looked at me like I was crazy as if it were it was the most awful thing he had ever seen. He did clean it up by saying my body is beautiful and that I shouldn’t hide it with an granny skirt but still, I got the point. Charles is not the type to ever criticize a thing I wear, he is about the most non-judgmental, diplomatic person ever when it comes to most things, especially my clothing. So, for him to have such strong feelings about it, I knew it had to look like hell. We left the store with no bathing suit but I did buy a pair of cute khaki maternity overalls.

New Year’s Eve

We aren’t doing anything special for New Year’s this year, not that we ever really do. Clearly, I am not going dancing, we are not party-ers in that sense and prefer to spend time with friends at home if we can. This year we are having one of my best girlfriends over as well as some other friends and we plan on just getting a bunch of good food, some shrimp cocktail, buffalo wings, sushi (tempura for me) and some good cheese and wine (soy milk for me), and just ringing in the New Year together. We also plan to go see Ali which most people seem to really like. I know it sounds like a pretty boring way to celebrate New Year’s but honestly, the thought of going out to some crowded party, in the cold, spending money for some mediocre food or pre-fixed dinner is not my idea of a good time. We have so much to look forward to and be thankful for in this new year that we will be content to simply spend it with friends marking the last year we will ever spend without a child.

I wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe New Year’s celebration as well as a year full of much joy and happiness with your new babies.

Love always,
Corinne and her baby
