Introduction

Birth Story of Kian David William

On February 4th the contractions began, after being admitted to the hospital and monitored for a week I was sent home at 36 weeks. My contractions continued along the same lines until Feb 23. That morning as I was getting ready to head into work to train my replacement my contractions changed. They were much stronger than they had been over the past 3 weeks. Ryan tried to convince me not to go to work but I said I had to get it done just incase I had the baby early. At work I realized this was likely the real thing. I sent my support person, Stacy, an MSN message to say I thought today was the day and I began to train my replacement. Knowing that once at the hospital they would not allow me to eat I made the decision to stay at work until pizza lunch and then head to the hospital on a full stomach. When I got home I monitored the contractions and called Ryan at work to see if he wanted to come home and pick me up or wait a few hours and go in. He said he would be right home. I got the hospital bags ready and brought them down to the door. When Ryan arrived we loaded the car and headed to the hospital. When I got to triage at 2pm they hooked me up to monitor my contractions. As the nurse was monitoring them every 6-7 minutes the baby had a heart deceleration. She called for Drs immediately and they decided to admit me. They checked and I was 2cm and 75% effaced with a bulging bag of waters. The Drs decided they would break my waters just as soon as a labor and delivery room came available. They moved me to an old labor and delivery room for the time being to monitor the baby's heartbeat. I had Ryan call Stacy and tell her today was the day. I continued to have regular contractions that were getting stronger and stronger. I heard from Stacy when she arrived that they had run out of triage rooms and laboring women were waiting in the waiting room for a room to be checked. A nurse came in to tell me she was waiting until 5pm for relief staff to move me to an open labor room so I would have a nurse. They ended up moving me without a nurse because they needed the room I was in. I got into the labor room and the waiting began. The baby's heartbeat shot up to 180 bpm from the normal 130 - 140 bpm. They began to worry he was having troubles and monitored him closely. I still did not have a nurse but was being monitored by the head nurse who was overlooking all other nurses. When the nursing shifts changed at 7pm my nurse arrived. Her name was Alecia (I think my memory is failing me a bit) and she was great. We all ended up watching the Leafs game even though they lost. Things were so busy the Drs had not had a chance to come back and break my waters. At about 9:30pm I decided I wanted the epidural as the pain was increasing and I'd had enough. Since it was so busy they told us our wait would be about 30 mins. The Drs arrived at 10:20 and broke my waters, it felt as if I was peeing uncontrolable. I noticed as I had a contraction more water would come out. At 11:45pm the epidural man appeared, I thanked him for arriving. He first put the epidural in and it only numbed my back ... he took it out and redid it. I lay on my right side and felt my leg get warm. They waited 20 mins and tested my leg for cold ... I felt nothing so they rolled me to my left side. It took much longer to get this side frozen so they added a bolus of freezing to help it along. This froze me to my breasts. I then began to feel the contractions in my bum as pressure. The nurse checked me and I was 3cm along and fully effaced so she began oxytocin to increases my contractions. I was feeling a lot of pressure with each contraction and the baby's heartbeat kept missing on the external monitors so they put the internal monitor on him. The nurse was going for her break at 3am so she told us the nurse across the hall could help if we needed it. No sooner had she left then I had a very strong contraction that I was unable to breath through, I thought my bum was going to blow off it hurt and I felt so much pressure. Then not 2 minutes later I had another one only I felt the urgent need to push. I made Ryan go get the nurse from across the hall when she came in I told her I needed to push. She checked me and I had gone from 3cm to 10 cm in less than 15 minutes. They called my nurse back from her break and called the Drs. They arrived and decided I would likely be pushing for an hour since it was my first baby ... I believe this was the first time I uttered a curse word. I began pushing and sure enough an hour later he arrived. They said he came so fast that his shoulders caused a few tears. He was born on Feb 24 at 4:05am he weighed 6lbs 5 oz and was 19 inches long. His first apgar was 8 and his second was 9. They tell me this was due to his colour ... when they first put him on my chest his arms and legs were purple in colour. I was really worried he wasn't crying but after Ryan cut the cord the crying began. They put the antibiotic cream in his eyes and gave him the vitamin K shot. An hour later they moved me to a private room and our life as a family began.
