June 7, 2001
Well, Camryn's here! We went into have a sonogram on Tuesday morning and happily found out that the little stinker had turned on her own and was head down! We were so happy and excited. For a brief moment I was scared because I had resigned myself that I wouldn't have to go through labor.
At 8 a.m. the doctor broke my water and the pitocin was started. When she checked me I was 1cm and 50% effaced. Dr. Parr went ahead and put a scalp monitor on Camryn, because she was to hard to monitor. She was a wiggly little thing!
We called our labor supports (Tina and Missy) and my mom (who had Baylie). We let them know what was going on and when we wanted each of them to come to the hospital. An hour later the nure checked me and I was 2cm, 50%, and Camryn was -3 station. Tina arrived first about 9:30 or ten. Missy showed up right after her. By then I was 3cm, 60% effaced and she was still at -3 station. My contractions were 2-3 minutes apart. I was getting frustrated because the pain was getting worse and I was doing the breathing, but the monitor was saying 2 or 5 or something equally pathetic. The nurse came in and adjusted the belt, then I didn't feel like I was such a baby. Of course, she assured me that the monitor in no way could be an accurate translation of the pain I felt. Whatever. I wanted it to say that it hurt!
At 10:45 the nurse, Michelle, came in and told me the baby's heartrate was fluctuating too much during the contractions and that I would need to wear an oxygen mask. Once I did her heartrate was much more even. But it certainly was hard to labor with that mask on. Kirt kept reminding me it was for the baby.
While having Missy and Tina there certainly entertained me, I decided that I wanted the epidural. The pain was such that I found myself holding my breath even though I knew I shouldn't. My whole body was so tense I was worried I wouldn't progress. Dr Macon, the anethesiologist, came in around 11:30. I was checked immediately after that and I was 4cm, 60% effaced and the baby was -2 station.
After the epidural I felt better, although I still could feel pains on my right side. The doctor gave me another bolice of the epidural and we began to play cards. At 1:30 I was 5 cm and we determined that the epidural needed to be repostioned. I was checked at 2:15 and we found I was still 5 cm. I was a litle frustrated thatI hadn't progressed at all in the last hour or so. Honestly, things were still going well, so looking back I guess I was a little impatient. The girls and I continued to play cards while Kirt took a nap.
About 3:30 Kirt called Mom and told her I was still at 5cm, so she should put Baylie down for her nap. She told him she had just fallen asleep. He told her it would probably be closer to dinnertime, so just listen for the phone. I then told Missy if she wanted to go get ther girls from my mom's house and take them to the sitter's in Taylor (a 45 minute drive each way) that she might want to go so she wouldn't miss anything. She decided to wait a little while longer until our game was over.
At 3:50 Dr. Parr came in and checked me. I was glad because I suddenly felt realkly tired and had a lot of breakthrough pain and burning. I was having to do my "hoo hoo hee hees" even with the epidural. Which was surprising since I couldn't even move my own legs! I almost feel out of bed when she announced the in the last one and a half hours I had changed and was now 9cm with a lip only. We quickly called my mom and Missy left to get her girls because mom didn't have their carseats. At 4:05 my nurse had me push 2 or 3 times, then told mne to stop because Dr. Parr was back at her office and had not responded to her page yet. The nurse then announced that she was putting on sterile gloves because she was worried she would have to deliver because, although I wasn't pushing, Camryn was coming out. The doctor then rushed in and in one push she was out. It was so overwhelming! I couldn't believe how quickly things went. It was amazing. The whole thing didn't hit me until Camryn was placed on my tummy. I said to Kirt "We had a baby!"
Camryn's apgars scores were 9 and 9, she was 8 pounds, 1 ounce and was 20 inches. She came into the world at 4:28 p.m.
What a wonderful experience! I can't believe how different EVERYTHING about this pregnancy and especially the labor was from the first time. I was just a miracle, an answered prayer.
By the time we went home Wednesday evening Camryn was weighing in at 7lbs 11.5 oz. She is so tiny! We were definantly off concerning the weight! She's so much smaller than her sister was that Mom and Baylie had to buy a few outfits for her on before we came home.
I feel great, which is also unlike the first birth. I've not had the swelling I had with Baylie nor the pain at my episiotomy site. I was up walking around without help immediately. I'm truly amazed that this is all real. She's such an angel and everyone says she looks like her daddy. She has dark brown hair (like Kirt) and dark blue eyes like her sister. Her nose is exactly like Baylie's and her expression when she cries reminds me of Baylie also.
We're happy to be home together and are loving every sleepless moment. The only thing that is different is tha I didn't breastfeed Baylie, so I got a lot more rest with her. Kirt can't help with the feedings until my milk comes in, then he asked me to pump some so he could do night feedings. Of course, Baylie wants to help also.
I guess that's all to the story. I should go because I'm sure Camryn's ready to eat again!
