Eloise's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

August 5, 1999

24 weeks.

Had our first ante-natal class at the hospital on Tuesday evening. Supposedly it was an 'early' pregnancy class but I don't really imagine 24 weeks is considered 'early'! It was very broad and I didn't really learn anything much, but it was good to do something 'official' with hubby. The full-blown six week course starts later this month.

The most interesting thing that came up in class was the idea that your baby's active times in-utero are very often it's active-awake times once born. I usually experience a lot of kicking and squirming early in the morning, say between 6 am and 8-9am. We'll see if this theory pans out once the critter's born, shall we? Will s/he force me to be an early riser?

Baby has been a little bit quiet this week. Nowhere near as many kicks and squirms, and when I do feel them they're much more gentle than they used to be. I'm afraid it is a little bit disconcerting, especially added to the fact that I haven't put on any weight for over a week. Should I be concerned? Or am I over-reacting as we pregnant women seem to do from time to time? I must admit, it's really hard not to worry every now and again - will everything be alright? Will I be able to carry bubby to term? Will something untoward go wrong between now and 40 weeks? OH, it goes on.

But despite these niggling worries, I'm really, really, REALLY starting to enjoy this pregnancy-journey now. I feel good, I'm enjoying my 'round-as-a-bun' belly, and I'm getting very attached to the little bundle of arms and legs squirming in my belly. I'm feeling relaxed about the hospital, relaxed about the birth, and I'm really looking forward to finally meeting this baby. But gee, sometimes the thought of four months to go seems like a long stretch - I guess it really isn't in the grand scheme of things and I'm trying really hard to relax and enjoy this special time - at least before the aches and pains and discomfort of next trimester come upon me.

Hope everyone's happy and healthy.

All the best,

Eloise
