Week 20!

Let me first start by saying that I am SO glad today is here! We had our appointment this morning with the specialist and everything turned out to be OK. Thank you Lord!

The Dr. started by doing an ultrasound. He checked the heart and kidneys and told us that he didn’t see anything on the heart that would cause any concern. He said that both kidneys appear to be of normal size but that both kidneys have excess fluid on them of about 1ml more than they should at this stage. He said that isn’t too terrible. He said that other factors to look at in the baby are thick skin on the back of the neck and shorter than normal bones. He checked those things and said that all in all the baby is normal in development. I asked what the excess fluid means and he said that is an indication of downs but doesn’t mean anything for sure. We would have to do an amnio to be for sure. DH and I had already decided that if the only reason to do an amnio was to find out if the baby has downs we were not going to do it. The Dr. agreed that the risks of doing an amnio outweighed the risk of our baby being born with downs.

WHAT A RELIEF that nothing serious is wrong with the baby! The Dr. is going to re-check the kidneys in 6-8 wks to check the fluid again. He said that if the fluid continues to collect around the kidneys that the baby might need surgery at birth to correct it. Something about the urethra being long causing extra fluid to collect but at the same time it could all correct itself before the little guy makes his appearance. So, we just need to wait and see what happens. The Dr. said that it is common in boys to have this tube be a little longer than normal and that you just have to track it to determine what needs to be done. Typical boy, already worrying his mommy!

Well, that is it for this week. Now I can relax a little and enjoy this little boy in my belly!

Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement and good thoughts!! It means a lot to me!
