Jen's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

September 19, 2003

I don't really have all that much to report, but I'm falling behind so I'll write an entry anyway. However, it will be more about all the things coming in the next few weeks than about what has been happening....

A real, live preggo buddy!

Actually, one of my good friends here at work just told me the other day that she is pregnant too. She is one of only two people here at the office that I've told, because I was coaching her on the TTC front. So we were keeping track of each other's cycles. She knew exactly when to ask if my AF had shown, and I knew when to ask about her. Well, it only took me two cycles and it took her about five or six, but she was finally successful and is about five weeks pregnant now! Pretty exciting stuff. We're in the same department so it'll be interesting when I announce my news and then a couple months (weeks?) later she announces hers. On top of that, we live in the same neighbourhood and will be off on maternity leave at the same time, so I'll have a mom-buddy to cruise up and down the street with and hit the coffee shops!

Car shopping

We have started shopping for a second car, which will be my very own. We currently have our eye on two. The first is a Subaru Legacy stationwagon, 1998, dark blue, with only 81,000 kms on it (don't know what that is in miles, sorry!). But to put it in perspective, our 99 Honda Civic has 180,000 kms on it, so 81,000 in a 1998 car is nice and low. Anyway, the Subaru is a bit over what we wanted to spend, but it's perfect. We would have to go into a bit of debt to get it though, and we just managed to erase all our debts. The other car we're looking at is exactly the same as the car we currently own. The only difference is the colour. The one we own is silver, and the one we're looking at is black. And actually, the one we're looking at has lower mileage than our car (164,000 kms I think). The Honda is totally within our price range. So here's the decision: Do we spend more, get the car I really want with lower mileage and AWD, and go into some debt? Or do we stay within budget and get a car we already own (is that weird?) with higher mileage? Is a Civic too small for a car seat and all other baby paraphernalia?? I'm a Libra and can't make decisions. Help!

Busy weekend coming

We are spending this weekend doing three things: car shopping, maternity clothes shopping and garage sale preparation. We are planning a garage sale (well, a yard sale since we don't have a garage) for next weekend and there is a TON of stuff to go through. I'm dreading it. But it will be nice to get rid of so much crap we don't need and maybe even make a bit of cash (towards the car, clothes, etc??).

I'm hitting Old Navy maternity this weekend. I've reached that awful in-between stage where my pants are too tight around the waist, but you still can't tell I'm pregnant when I'm fully dressed. Add to that the fact that I haven't yet told work, and I can't really wear maternity clothes yet anyway. Can't you just see it - "Um, Jen, why do your pants have a giant elastic panel on the front? Is that the new style??" But I'm going this weekend to start my wardrobe, and I'll hopefully tell work at the end of next week. In the meantime, I'm wearing pants that are too big, or just unbuttoning the top of my jeans while sitting at my desk. Classy!

Doula and classes

I think in my last entry I'd mentioned that I was looking into a doula and prenatal classes. Well, unfortunately the doula that gives the classes we're taking (starting late October) isn't available for early March deliveries. So we're taking her class, but she won't be my doula. So I'm back to square one in the doula search. Anyone have any doula recommendations in the Toronto area?? I do have a list that the midwives provided, and I will start calling soon.

Welcome home kitty! and finished reno

I've got my beloved kitty back. I had to drive to my parents' house (four hours away) last weekend to retrieve him. But he is home and safe and sound, and he's so cuddly these days - he must have missed his mommy! OK, I know, I'm an overly-maternal cat owner. In related news, the reno is completed and we have been busy priming. We'll paint when I make up my mind what colour I want. We also have to put all the mouldings back up - baseboard, and door and window mouldings. They're in a million pieces and it'll be like putting a puzzle back together. Then we have to deal with the floors in those rooms. It's old wood subfloor, which if you sand down is actually quite attractive. I might do that, and just paint them for a cottagey look. If they don't look that great when they're cleaned up, we'll carpet. But I'm so glad to get rid of the dark orange carpet in the hall, and the turquoise carpet in the office. WHAT were people thinking in the '70s??

Ultrasound appointment

I had quite a struggle with this. I wasn't sold on getting an ultrasound, and I didn't really care about finding out the sex. I weighed all the pros and cons, looked at all the potential risks, and what it comes down to is that Chris really, really wants to have an ultrasound. In fact, I know now that he'd be so disappointed if he didn't get to "see" his baby on screen. So I'm getting one. I've scheduled an appointment for October 6, and hopefully it will all boil down to a fun, positive, exciting experience and make things all the more "real" for Chris. I am thinking of it as a gift to him. He started talking to the baby last night after reading in my Dr. Sears book that the baby can now hear noises and talking from the outside world. It was pretty cute. He also wants to know when we're going to start reading to my stomach. I guess we'll have to hit the bookstore!

Alright, I know this entry has been boring and short, but that's all folks! My next entry will include details of the yard sale, my upcoming birthday (September 30th, I'll be 29!) and all sorts of more interesting things, I hope.

***TALK TO ME***

Is it weird to have two of the car? Is a Civic impractical for a baby and all the stuff that goes along with that? Should we splurge on the car I really want??

What was your husband's reaction to seeing his baby in an ultrasound?

When did you start talking and reading to your stomach? Playing music?

And finally, when did you feel the first movements? I can hardly wait for that.
