Jennifer B's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

January 9, 2001

Well, I had another doctor's appointment today. The doctor checked my cervix for dilation and found that the contractions weren't doing anything to change it, which is a good thing. This means that I can go about normal activity even if I get contractions. I do need to go in if they are hard or if blood or fluid comes with them.

I am also very swollen in my face and hands. She is worried about pre-eclampsia since there was some protein in my urine. She is doing a 24-hour urine collection beginning this morning to test the true level. Who knows what will happen if that has a bad result. I'm returning my urine and having blood tests done on Wednesday. Then, I have another doctor's appointment next Thursday. She put them at every week because she wants to keep an eye on the pre-eclampsia stuff.

I am measuring 31 weeks, but the ultrasounds say 30 weeks and the doctor says 28 weeks, 3 days. I guess I just need to be ready throughout the month of March and into the beginning of April. We will see when he decides to make his entrance. If I do have pre-eclampsia, I might have to be induced early. One of my friends had it and was forced to deliver one month early due to swelling and high blood pressure.

The doctor also said that I may have broken my tailbone during my fall on the ice. I still can't lift my right leg off the ground to any height and even walking is painful. It sure was a sight when I had to get into the stirrups! She said that there is nothing they could do about it, pregnant or not, so I should simply not do the things that hurt. Easier said than done. I have been so hungry lately. I wake up in the middle of the night hungry, but I haven't indulged yet. I have tried to eat healthier since my last appointment since I have been gaining so much. This time I have only gained 4 pounds since my last appointment. I think that's normal. That puts me at a total gain of 28 pounds. That's a bit high, but I'm not terribly worried about it since I am exercising now and will continue after he comes. I also heard that breastfeeding burns lots of calories, so hopefully that will help the pounds melt off, too.
