New Due Date: March 19, 2001
I went in this morning for my 1-hour glucose tolerance test, an ultrasound (routine), and the normal blood pressure, urine, etc. tests. I have gained 24 pounds, which is too much, but I think it is due to the swelling. When the doctor showed up, she immediately knew that I was swelling and told me she needed to check my urine. There was a little protein, so we did some more lab work (with the glucose tolerance test) to test for pre-eclampsia. That was the bad part of the appointment that I was expecting. It gets worse. Before going to the ultrasound room, she wanted to hear the heartbeat and measure the fundus. The heartbeat was 137 beats per minute, which is great. My fundus was measuring 27, which is not great. I am only supposed to be about 24 today. She said that a 1-centimeter difference can slide, but a 3-centimeter difference needs to be looked into. Then she said that she would not waste our time with an ultrasound at the clinic and instead would send me to the hospital to get a level 2. I asked her what could be wrong and she said that there could be too much amniotic fluid, the wrong due date, two babies instead of one, kidney problems, or other birth defects. I was really frightened then.
Luckily, my doctor was able to get me into the hospital today. They were very efficient with the paperwork and I went right in to get the level 2. The bed had a second monitor placed above it so I could watch while lying down. That was neat. The tech went through and identified everything for me, then said that she was evaluating things for the doctor. She ended up changing my due date to March 19 (yea!) and said that even for the new date, this is a big baby. She verified that "he" was a "he" and said that he weighs over 2 pounds already. Wow! I do not know if there is anything wrong with the baby, she just said that my doctor would call me by Thursday with the results. That bothers me. She did the ultrasound and saw everything, but would not tell me one way or the other. Ugh! Now I am trying to finish my last paper for my last class before graduation and cannot seem to concentrate on a thing. I need some stress relief!
