Jennifer's Diary Entries

July 20, 2002

Hi all,

I finally have a free minute or two to write a quick birth story here. I went in last Friday morning (7/12) for an induction. The pitocin was started around 7:30 a.m. and I was feeling pretty good. The RN checked my progress-- I was 3 cm and 90% effaced. I decided to try getting in the hot tub to see if that would help move things along. I dilated 1 more cm. The doctor came in at 11:15 a.m. and broke my bag of water, then labor seemed to get really intense. I spent the afternoon breathing a lot and getting into and out of the tub to help me relax. It did help somewhat, but the cx were unbelievable.

At 5 p.m. I asked for the epidural, ( I was 6 cm) I couldn't take it anymore and the doctor and nurse thought it might help with the progression. Yeah for the epidural, it was wonderful. At about 8:15 p.m., they checked me again and said I was 10 cm and could start pushing. Music to my ears. The cx were coming right on top of one another and I was feeling a lot of pressure. I pushed a couple of times and the nurse could see the baby's head. So I pushed some more. At 9:15 p.m., she called the doctor to come in. By 10 p.m., the baby had only moved slightly, so I kept pushing. Sometime around 10:45 p.m., the baby's heart rate jumped to over 200 bpm and I had developed a fever (I was given IV antibiotics)- the doctor talked to me about using the vacuum extractor to help deliver the baby or a c-section because the baby was starting to be distressed. They called the on-call peditician to be present during the delivery in case the baby needed something. And I decided to try the vacuum first.

The ped. got there around 11:00 p.m. and despite the fact I kept telling people to just let me go home. (I think I was a little loopy from pushing for 3 hours). I continue to push with each contraction and at 11:22 p.m. with slight help from the vacuum extractor, Adam Alan was born.

He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 21 inches long. He needed antibiotics to be sure he didn't get any infection from the stressful delivery. Apparently, my pelvic bone is smaller than the doctor expected and said it was good thing I didn't go until my due date b/c I would have undoubtedly needed a c-section at that point.

We are doing well- breastfeding is going well. I am a little sore, but it's not unbearable. Adam is doing well, he lost some weight prior to d/c from the hospital, but is already gaining it back. We are adjusting well to each as a new family.

So it is with mixed emotions that I have decided to close this diary and not keep a Baby diary. I can't believe it, I have been writing a diary for over 2 years now. But in all fairness to others, I know I won't have the time to really put into a diary like I'd want to. And I know the feeling of waiting for a diary space to open up.

I want to thank all of you who have offered me a thought, prayer, email, note on my discussion board, etc over the time I have been here and at Preconception. It is greatly appreciated, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but the end is well worth it. Adam is a doll and my life has been forever changed for the best!!

Good luck to all of you as you await the delivery of your baby or that all special ++++HPT!!!! Cherish every moment and write it all down, it's makes for a terrific record of your journey.

Thanks again and Take care,

Jennifer and Adam (7/12/02)
