Expert Q&A
Question:
Do you think kids can be raised to be moral and spiritual without religion? I am having a person struggle with the religion of my youth, and as such, I have walked away from practicing my religion. Both my partner and I are agreeable in that children can be raised to value and respect life outside of the bounds of brick and mortar religion. The problem is our family and friends offer little innuendos about kids needing direction and a strong foundation, and that has me questioning myself. Help!
Answer:
The idea that morals and ethical behavior come only from religion is silly. In fact, many religions rely on fear as their basic method, and anyone can impart fear. From the get-go, humans respond to connection – from early attachment behaviors and responses to their social and emotional development later. Humans feel good when they are able to make positive connections with other humans. If you display that in your own behavior and reward it in theirs, and are open to talking about and allowing feelings, you will do just fine. Those innuendos come from people who don't understand that the most basic human health comes from connection. In fact, religion is more likely to take when a person is old enough to understand what he or she is choosing.
