Expert Q&A
Question:
How can I get skin-to-skin contact with my baby while in the hospital?
Answer:
During labor, mothers are usually hot and want the thermostat turned down. Now is the time to ask for the thermostat to be turned up a bit; a warm room will help baby to stabilize and facilitate the healing process for the new mother. When Mom and Baby have "skin-to-skin contact," a mother's body will warm her baby even more efficiently than a baby warmer.

Following the newborn procedures, a mother can unwrap the blankets in order to hold, look at and breastfeed their baby skin-to-skin, laying blankets over the top of the baby. This is a beautiful way to bond with and get to know your baby. Fathers can also provide skin-to-skin contact, being sure to cover baby with several blankets and to continue using the newborn hat.
