Expert Q&A
How does the umbilical cord get cut?
Typically, the cord is clamped immediately after birth, or once it stops pulsating. Two clamps are placed on the cord and the cutting takes place between the clamps. The doctor or midwife usually asks the new father if he would like to cut the cord, helping him to find the space between the clamps. Once mother and baby are no longer connected by the umbilical cord, the midwife will apply a small clamp to the baby's cord stump.
