Expert Q&A
How much do newborns sleep?
At the time of birth, babies are awake and alert. They often stay awake for an hour or so following birth and then sleep for several hours. During the first few weeks, babies will spend much of their time sleeping, possibly up to 15 hours a day. This time is broken up into many short sleep cycles. Between naps, babies will have alert and awake periods, when they will be looking around and enjoy communicating with you. At 2 to 3 weeks old, babies will experience a growth spurt. You may notice that your baby is eating more and staying awake for longer periods of time.
