Expert Q&A
If I'm on prescription medication, can they still collect my cord blood? What medications might affect the sample?
Although most medications will not affect cord blood collection and storage, if you are on any prescription medications, you should discuss each one with your obstetrician. There are some medications that should be avoided, including any immunosuppressive drugs, any chemo-therapy medications and steroids in general. The reason is that these medications may decrease the number of cells collected. The suggestion is to make certain that your obstetrician knows about all of the medications you are taking.
