Expert Q&A
Question:
Is the cord blood sample enriched for stem cells or is it stored whole?
Answer:
Each bank has processing procedures, and some banks, but not all, perform red blood cell removal. At CBR's bank, the sample is stored after the red blood cells are removed. The removal of the red blood cells has been shown to decrease ABO incompatibility, increase stem cell recovery and decrease the use of certain preservatives that may cause side effects in future recipients. Unfortunately, there are no processes currently available to enrich the sample for stem cells.
