Expert Q&A
Question:
Is there anything that I can do or take that may increase the amount of stem cells and/or blood collected at the time of delivery?
Answer:
Fortunately, almost all full-term infants will have enough cord blood/stem cells to be collected and stored successfully by the registry. There is no specific medication or diet recommended to increase the number of fetal umbilical stem cells. Although there are methods to increase the bone marrow production of stem cells, these have very restricted uses (i.e. chemo-therapies, etc.) and are NOT recommended during pregnancy. Therefore, there are no specific medications recommended. In general, all pregnant women should maintain a healthy well-balanced diet, take daily prenatal vitamins (including folic acid, calcium and iron), avoid taking medications unnecessarily, and have routine prenatal check ups."
