Expert Q&A
My baby might be premature. Can her cord blood still be effective and banked properly?
Depending upon the gestational age at birth, any infant's cord blood can be effectively banked, however, there are some general guidelines. To be effective there should be at least 25cc of blood collected and this typically occurs in premature infants who are greater than 32 weeks and at least 2500 grams in birth weight. Any infant meeting these criteria can have their bloods collected.
