Expert Q&A
Question:
What are the effects of Magnesium Sulfate on the collection of cord blood/stem cells?
Answer:
Magnesium sulfate is commonly used as an anticonvulsant for toxemia and as a tocolytic agent for premature labor. The fetus will see significant magnesium sulfate levels when the mother receives this medication, however, there are no scientific studies specifically addressing the issue of exposure to magnesium sulfate and the related success of fetal cord blood collection. We do know that the proper use of magnesium sulfate poses little health risk to the fetus or newborn.

There have been many successful cord blood collections in newborns that have been exposed to magnesium sulfate during the pregnancy. We can, therefore, assume that magnesium sulfate is not only safe to use during the pregnancy, but also that it has no known negative effects on the collection of the cord blood of the infant.
