Expert Q&A
Question:
What tests are done on the cord blood sample? Is MHCI typing included?
Answer:
With Cord Blood Registry (CBR), a family bank, when the sample is collected and transported to the cord blood bank, the only tests performed are ones to rule out infections in the sample. Until there is an identification of a potential recipient, no HLA typing is performed.

Typically with the public banks, if the infant who donated the cord blood can be identified, then a current blood sample is taken from the infant to confirm HLA matching with the potential recipient. This way none of the precious cord blood sample is used for anything other than the transplant itself to increase the success rates. Donor banks routinely type their samples upon dontation so they can list it for search.

At Cord Blood Registry's family bank there are testing aliquots that are stored with the cord blood sample which allow for HLA testing prior to release of an entire sample for transplant. If the cord blood is to be used for the donor, then the HLA match is known to be identical.
