When collecting cord blood, if the cord is left pulsating and not cut before hand, wouldn't the baby have a lower risk of developing these diseases in the first place because it is getting the blood to protect it?
Although there are some parents who believe that leaving the umbilical cord unclamped is beneficial for the newborn infant, there is no scientific evidence to support this. If the umbilical blood is allowed to drain towards the infant, then there will be fewer stem cells available for harvesting in the cord blood collection. The goal of cord blood banking is to retrieve as many of the stem cells as possible for storage for future usage.
