I think of ceiling paddle fans as functional, rather than decorative. My experience is that they circulate the air and cool very well except on the most humid days. Because they are functional, I don't like them to be a focal point in the room, so recommend that the color match the ceiling color as closely as possible.
The style of the fan needs to match the overall style of the home – choose a contemporary style for a contemporary home and a traditional style for a traditional home. Light kits can be attached to most fans for additional overhead lighting. Again, make sure the style of the light kit is in harmony with the style of the fan and the overall style of the home.
When possible, have a wall mounted speed control switch installed for the fan and a separate dimmer switch for the light kit. Fans with a reverse switch can be used year round – to assist with cooling in the summer and warming in the winter.
Fans come in a variety of sizes. The size of the fan needs to be in proportion to the space so it can adequately circulate the air. Also, make sure the blades clear the hinged doors of any wall mounted cabinets. It is important to have a well-balanced fan so it doesn't wobble and runs quietly. With children in the house, take extra sure the fan is mounted securely and sturdily – don't rely on wallboard to hold it up. And double check the fan blade mountings.
As a side note, some infants are entranced by the movement of the fan blades as they lay on a bed or blanket on the floor in a room with a fan. Put the fan on the lowest setting and see if your baby is interested.
