Expert Q&A
Question:
We know that we're going to be moving when our baby is about 7 months old because my husband's job is relocating. We want the baby's room to be babyish but know we'll have to tone it down when we put the house on the market. Do you have any ideas for ways to decorate it so it's not permanently babyish and will appeal to many types of buyers?
Answer:
Consider wallpapering the bedroom in a stripe or "sponge paint" wallpaper – any color you decide would be fine. If you choose a stripe, I would choose an all purpose stripe that would be suitable for almost any decor, something light and probably two-color (i.e. blue, pink, yellow or green or even a neutral on white). To give the room a nursery look, you could use a wallpaper border at the ceiling that is appropriate for the nursery. The border could be around a theme for the baby's room which would tie in with the bedding and accessories you choose. When purchasing the wallpaper border, you might buy some extra to be used at your new home so you can "move" the look of your baby's room with you.

When you put the house on the market, you might suggest to the realtor that you would be willing to replace the wallpaper border, at your expense, by applying a new border over the old one. You could even offer to allow the purchaser to choose the new border. It would be a very small gesture and cost you very little, but sometimes the small things are the most appreciated.
