Expert Q&A
Question:
I have a son already. Now that I'm due with my second child, a girl, how do I turn the nursery into a gender-neutral space, or make it more feminine, without spending a fortune?
Answer:
If the walls are painted, changing the color might be a place to begin. If the walls are wallpapered, try to work with what is there as wallpapering is much more expensive.

Consider developing a theme that is more feminine or gender neutral, which ever way you decide to go, with bedding, bumper pads etc and some art work on the walls. Before my granddaughter, Abby, was born in February, part of my job as "Nana To Be" was to assist in creating her room. The wallpaper, which wasn't what any of us would have chosen, had to stay. Fortunately it had a light background with blue and peach flowers, the woodwork was white and the floors were hardwood. The furniture in the room was a twin bed which fortunately had a white eyelet dust ruffle and white comforter, two small chests and a crib all of which were white.

We found a peach polka dot fabric for a simple fan folded window treatment which we lined in white and installed on round Prima swag holders covered in the peach fabric with a white fabric dot in the center of the swag holder. We made several decorative, ruffled pillows for the twin bed in this fabric and the same polka dot fabric in blue. We painted the bold wooden knobs on the dressers peach and "anchored" the room with a large blue area rug. We shopped for "theme" accessories and wound up using Beatrix Potter because of the rust and blue coloring in those articles which enhanced the colors in the room.

We are all amazed how much we love the room and have even come to like the wallpaper which was thought to be such a disadvantage when we began.
