Might you have friends or family members who could loan you furniture that is currently not being used? There might also be a "treasure" hidden away in someone's attic – a dresser, rocker or bassinet, perhaps.

Cribs which have a history may have a real sentimental value, but be warned: they can be safety traps. The Danny Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to baby safety issues, says of used cribs, "Most of these cribs are worn out, have missing or substitute parts, corner post extensions, wide slats and other dangerous features." If friends and family have nothing to spare, consider checking out secondhand stores. If you find something that looks a little "tired," consider this an opportunity for you to add new life to it by refinishing or painting it.

Let your creativity take over in regard to how you might "decorate" your attic or second hand store "treasures." You might consider painting each one of the dresser drawers a different color, or you might paint the basic dresser one color and the drawers a different color but all the same. Another possibility is to buy some large wooden knobs and paint them a contrasting color. The top of the chest can be used as a changing table. Put some padding on the top and a piece of vinyl over the padding. Staple the vinyl to the underside of the top of the chest. (Always check with your local paint store in regard to the safety of any product you apply to baby furniture before you proceed.)

Most of all, look forward to and enjoy the process. Ask for help. This is not about you or your husband's value, but about a temporary situation you find yourselves in. This is the only first child you will ever have. Cherish every moment. Believe this is the most memorable and special nursery you will ever decorate. Be enthusiastic about the opportunity you have been given to create a very special space for your baby, and remember that your own creativity is worth more than anything money can buy. Finally, be proud and grateful for the experience and the results of your efforts. I know you will have a wonderful nursery and I also know that your current financial crisis will not last forever.
