Expert Q&A
Question:
I have been having some problems with carpal tunnel syndrome. Can you explain the correlation between carpal tunnel syndrome and pregnancy. I did have it before I became pregnant, but it SEVERELY increased after I conceived. I am currently at 17 weeks and I must wear a cock-up splint to bed every night or else I am unable to sleep due to the intense pain.
Answer:
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) can flare up during pregnancy due to the high concentration of fluids your body has at that time. The neurovascular bundles that pass through the narrow tunnel of your wrist are often constricted because of edema or swelling. Even if you don't have grossly visible swelling there may be enough to cause you quite a problem. You might try elevating your arms higher than your heart if you are resting or sleeping at night. You can also try elevating the head of the bed by placing 2-3 inch blocks under the legs of the bed.

You didn't mention what you are doing during the day, but work activities can certainly cause you pain later in the day or during the night. If you are at a computer all day, make sure your chair, computer set up, etc. are all ergonomically sound. You might be extending your wrists rather than having them in a more neutral position (neither extended nor flexed) which is better. Contact either a physical or massage therapist in your area who has special training in lymphedema or pregnancy massage. This will definitely help if it is a vasocongestion or lymphatic drainage problem.
