Expert Q&A
How does pregnancy affect the muscles of the lower back?
This is a great question since back problems are the most commonly reported discomforts of pregnancy. The reasons for this are many. Changes in posture (due to a heavier "front load"), weak, overstretched abdominal muscles and hormonal relaxation of the back and pelvic joints and ligaments can all lead to back discomfort. The best defense is a strong back prior to pregnancy. Avoiding excessive weight gain and staying physically fit during pregnancy can also help. If you experience back discomfort during pregnancy, discuss this with your health care provider. After an evaluation, she or he may recommend exercises, especially the pelvic rock, a "belly" bra or abdominal support garment or hose, and/or a pregnancy massage.
