Expert Q&A
Question:
I am 24 weeks pregnant with twins. I have noticed swelling in the vaginal area over the last couple of weeks. This seems to be getting worse. It is almost as if my vagina is turning inside out. It is starting to scare me. It feels really uncomfortable and looks really gross. I didn't get this with my first pregnancy. Is this normal? Will it go back to normal after I give birth?
Answer:

You are suffering from vulvar varices, engorged veins in the vulvar area. This is caused by the uterus impinging on the inferior vena cava, the large vein which brings blood back to the heart from areas below the waist. While it is a common problem in pregnancy, it can be very uncomfortable and unsightly. It will typically resolve after delivery. Prior to delivery, laying on one's left side whenever possible will help some.
