Question:
A few weeks ago, I started doing antenatal aerobics classes at the hospital and really loved the first couple. However after the most recent class I found that I began to get terrible pains in my lower legs the night after class. Now I seem to get these pains no matter what I do. I don't know whether to keep attending the classes or not as I want to maintain my aerobic fitness, yet don't want to worsen these pains (which I guess are to do with circulation). I wear proper cross trainer shoes to class and the class is moderately low impact. However, I don't think that the floor is a proper sprung aerobics floor – just concrete covered with spongy carpet. Do you have any advice for me?
Answer:
Any time you experience pain during exercise you should always stop that activity and speak to your doctor. If you're doctors advice doesn't satisfy you, you're always safe in just discontinuing the activity. Try a non-weight bearing activity like stationery cycling to maintain your cardiovascular fitness. If you stop taking the class and your pain goes away, then maybe it was the floor. Then you may want to gradually move into another class with a better floor surface for the movement. But don't hesitate to speak to your health care provider to discuss other possibilities of what might be going on with you in your specific situation.
