Expert Q&A
Question:
I am almost 20 weeks pregnant and have a sharp pain in my upper left butt cheek. It hurts and feels like I am being stabbed when I get up and/or walk. I have read a few things that a chiropractor can fix this, is that the case? Or is there anything else I can do? I have iced it, but it is not getting any better.
Answer:

Many of my female patients initiate care when they are having symptoms such as yours. While the pregnancy can be the cause of your discomfort understand what is probably occurring. The changes in your body might be causing a subluxation in your lower back area. A subluxation is when you have a bone or multiple bones out of their proper biomechanical position and this causes pressure on the nerves in that area. The symptom can really be anything but of course a common one is pain. You are probably wondering if it is safe to be "adjusted" while you are pregnant. You will be best served by having a thorough history and examination by your local Doctor of Chiropractic so they can determine how to treat you responsibly. I have treated scores of pregnant women over the years right up to the delivery date for the same problem you describe with great results. I would suggest you make that appointment soon. While this is a "pain in the ...." for you, it could be a lot worse by going down the leg. A consultation with you local Doctor of Chiropractic should ensure it does not get any worse.
