Expert Q&A
My dear husband has very sweetly pointed out a new development in my pregnancy (I'm 18 weeks) -- snoring. I pried a description out of him and it's not gentle snoring, but "what's that noise down the hall? Should I wake her up or should I go sleep on the couch?" kind of snoring. I've propped pillows behind me so I'm sleeping on my left side. Is there anything else I can do? And why is this happening?
During pregnancy your body makes high levels of progesterone. Progesterone acts to relax smooth muscles and blood vessels. This relaxation results in the stuffy nose of pregnancy, also the heartburn and constipation of pregnancy. To combat the snoring, try treating the nasal congestion with saline nose spray (like Ocean) or use nose strips to open your nasal passages. If the snoring worsens or is associated with episodes of apnea (not breathing or gasping) you should see your primary care physician for further evaluation.
