Expert Q&A
Question:
I am having pain in my buttock area, sometimes it is the right side, sometimes it is the left. I have talked to my doctor about this and was advised to take Tylenol and use a heating pad on a low setting. This works temporarily. I have just noticed since my last doctor appointment that my tailbone(coccyx) is changing shape. There is a definite dip where there was not one before. Is this normal? I am 22 1/2 weeks and the baby is currently in a breech position. I am not feeling much as far as movement goes but the ultrasound I had last week showed that everything was fine.
Answer:
As with many pregnant women, you are probably dealing with lax ligaments of the sacroiliac joints and the joint between the sacrum and your tailbone. You can thank your hormones for that. Along with many other joints in the body, your coccyx changes when you're pregnant in preparation for labor and delivery. Do you have a lot of pain with sitting? Since this involves the coccyx, my best advice would be that you see a Women's Health Physical Therapy specialist in your area. You need hands-on help with this; exercise or positioning alone will provide limited relief. After a thorough evaluation of your problem, the therapist may perform a safe and effective mobilization technique as part of treatment. If you have difficulty locating a therapist in your area, contact the American Physical Therapy Association at 800-999-APTA and ask for assistance in finding a physical therapist with experience working with pregnant women. In the meantime, try to keep your standing and sitting posture symmetrical (don't stand on one leg, shifting back and forth). While sitting, place a small cushion or towel roll at the small of your back to maintain the normal spinal curves. Avoid crossing your legs.
