Expert Q&A
This is my second pregnancy, and again my pubic bone is separating. It's very painful, and I've tried a reenie belt which doesn't work. My practitioner has told me to stay off my feet as much as possible, which I try. But with a 4-year-old at home, it's very difficult. How can I alleviate this pain?
If the pelvic ring, which includes your pubic bones and sacroiliac joints, is not lined up symmetrically, using the reenie belt will just increase the pain. This is because it serves to compress the front and back joints of the pelvis which are out of position. Because this is the second time you have had difficulty with the pubic symphysis separating, I recommend you see a physical therapist in your area that specializes in treating pregnant women. The therapist can evaluate your problem carefully, and, if need be, provide hands-on treatment to restore normal joint alignment. Once you achieve that, the reenie belt can do its job of keeping the pelvis in alignment and will not be painful. In the meantime, avoid excessive separation of the legs; squatting is good during pregnancy, but avoid wide separation of the knees in this position. If you have a lot of pain going from sit to stand and vice versa try this little trick: place your two fists which are side by side, between your knees. While getting up or sitting down, press the knees together while at the same time you are pushing out against the knees with the fists. This is an isometric contraction of your inner thigh muscles and may help with pain. And finally, remember to stand symmetrically, your weight evenly distributed through both legs.
